Since 2023 Prof. Dr. Nicolaus von Wirén is Managing Director of the Leibniz-Institute for Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research in Gatersleben, Germany. After studying agro-biology, he obtained his PhD at Hohenheim University in plant nutrition after a one year-stay at the University of Tokyo. He then went with an EMBO and Alexander von Humboldt-fellowship to the CNRS Montpellier and later to King’s College in London before he took over the chair for Plant Nutrition at Hohenheim University, Stuttgart, in 2001. In 2009 he moved to the Leibniz Institute as Head of the ‘Physiology and Cell Biology’ Department allowing him to merge research on plant nutrition with plant genetics.
